Nebraska Dairy Convention Includes Educational Seminars, Checkoff, Dairy Princess and Ambassadors and Great American Milk Drive

The 2017 Nebraska Dairy Convention held February 21 featured several checkoff activities.

The noon lunch, attended by more than 150 dairy farmers and industry stakeholders, included a Dairy Checkoff Update with Midwest Dairy CEO Lucas Lentsch discussing partnership relationships, and how the national, regional and state levels of the checkoff work together to focus on the key areas identified under a Unified Marketing Plan. Partnerships at the national level are able to make the most of dairy farmer investment while "using other people's money" to help promote sales and trust in the dairy community. The group heard the term "milk fat is back" several times.

Jan Shearer Iowa State UniversityAttendees had the opportunity for several educational presentations.  One of these presentations featured Dr. Jan Shearer from Iowa State University speaking about lameness.  Dr. Tom Oelberg from Diamond V spent time discussing TMR audits, the order to load feeds into wagons, and when to replace auger blades.  The final presentation discussed the impact of social Social Media workshopmedia through a remote presentation by Lisa Leach, a Kansas dairy farmer who challenged Chipotle to be more honest in its marketing.

Marta Pulfer, daughter of Kent and Jodi Pulfer of Wayne, Dairy Convention evening banquetwas presented as the 2017 Dairy Princess. She will be active throughout the year along with five Nebraska Dairy Ambassadors. The five Dairy Ambasadors are college students working in a partnership with Midwest Dairy and Nebraska Dairy Extension Educator, Kim Clark. The ambassadors will have a marta Pulfer 2017 Dairy Princessbusy year successfully fulfilling the requirements to help promote dairy throughout the state and qualify for scholarships.

Other award winners were announced, and the convention raised $2,500 to be contributed to the Great American Milk Drive.

We have begun to translate several NebGuides into Spanish.  This NebGuide, written in Spanish, discusses common dairy cow diseases related to nutrition. It is a great resource to have available for your Spanish speaking employees.

Scholarship Opportunities


Deadline extended to April 1
The Nebraska Division of Midwest Dairy Association will be awarding seven educational awards: one $1500 award for studentMidwest Dairy Association logos studying in the dairy field, one $1000 award for students studying in the dairy field, and five $500 awards which apply to any college major or degree. Applicants who qualify include any producer who funds Midwest Dairy Association, the producer’s spouse, the producer’s children or grandchildren. The producer must have an active dairy operation as of January 1st of the year the scholarship will be awarded. The producer must reside in the Nebraska Division territory. January Dairy Budgets

Rober Tigner, Extension Educator Red Willow CountyJanuary 2017 dairy budgets net return to management increased by 29 cents/cwt compared to Dec 16 for the 20,000 pound freestall model while the 24,000 model saw a 42 cents/cwt increase. January feed costs were 17 cents/cwt higher but gross income was 46 cents/cwt higher. Total variable costs were 10.5 cents/cwt higher. All of this was the outcome from a PPD that rose by 1.08, protein price that was $0.5154 lower, and butterfat price $0.1899 higher.
