Teamwork makes family
dairy farm thrive
Published in Growing Magazine Fall 2017

Ben Steffen, dairy producer, with calfThe most important part of Ben Steffen's dairy farm is the people.

The cows and crops are, of course, essential in his diversified dairy and crop production farm near Humboldt, but it's the relationships and teamwork with his wife, Paula Sue, and their employees that he values most.
The Steffens have four full-time and two part-time employees and five or six family members working with them. "In our operation we're a team. No job is unimportant," said Steffen, a 1984 University of Nebraska–Lincoln ag honors graduate. "We're a group of people who enjoy working together who find ways to grow the business, survive and thrive." Continue...

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is granting agricultural haulers (livestock and/or commodities) a 90-day waiver (delay) of ELD compliance.  This brings the compliance date for livestock haulers to March 18, 2018.  This will allow the agency to analyze a long-term delay and to review comments relating to industry's long-term ELD waiver petition.  The agency will also be publishing guidance to help clarify the 150-air mile ag exemption. Through NC's efforts, it has been made very clear to FMCSA that the agency is not prepared for this rollout, and more outreach is needed to agricultural stakeholders AND carrier enforcement on the 150-air mile ag exemption.

While we are very grateful to the agency for this 90-day delay, we still intend to pursue our congressional policy rider fully exempting livestock haulers from the ELD mandate while we pursue a fix to hours-of-service.
