NSDA Update

  • The Thiele Dairy Open House is scheduled for October 13th.  We hope to see you there.
  • At Husker Harvest Days, we did an interview with NTV and talked about Dairy3ForMe and Grow Nebraska Dairy.  That same day, Dwaine Junck represented NSDA during a press conference with the Governor talking about property tax and trade and TPP.  The conference represented farmer leadership from all the commodities.
  • The WSA Board (Doug Temme) has met a couple times to evaluate the direction WSA is going, currently without an Executive Director.  There continues to be a lot of discussion related to combining resources in some way with AFAN, even though their focuses are completely different.  The goal is to look for some efficiency in operation.
  • ACCN (Ag Consumer Communications Network) is a newly created coalition which has 11 agricultural partners including both NSDA and MDA.  This is an effort being let to unite agriculture and to brand Nebraska Agriculture with a common message, enhancing the efforts of all the groups, and being able to pull in outside money from various identified foundations and stakeholders within the greater ag community.  This effort has moved forward with seed money that each group put into it and has done some consumer research regarding messaging as well as a logo.
  • The focus at Aksarben this year was technology in agriculture and Connie with Automated Dairy Specialists displayed the use of technology in cow monitoring.

Assessment Matrix will Serve as a Valuable Tool for Nebraska Counties Making Livestock Siting Decisions

LINCOLN - Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) Director Greg Ibach, in consultation with an appointed committee, has approved a matrix designed to assist local officials in evaluating livestock siting applications.
The development of the assessment matrix is a result of LB106 which was passed by the Nebraska Legislature and signed by the Governor in 2015. Under the bill, NDA was directed to create the assessment matrix based on input from a committee appointed by the NDA director.  The committee is comprised of representatives from several entities involved in livestock and zoning development, including producers and county officials. United Nations on Antibiotics: Huge Implications for Food

Health leaders around the world are using words like “historical” and “possible turning point” to describe a declaration passed by the UN General Assembly aiming to slow down the spread of bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics. The declaration requires countries to come up with a two-year plan to protect the potency of antibiotics. Countries also need to create ways to monitor the use of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture, start curbing that use and begin developing new antibiotics that work. Continue...
