How Much is Standing Hay Worth?

Very soRobert Tigner pictureon this question will pop up and will ask about selling a full year of production or a specific cutting. Getting a handle on how much either is worth is often just guess work. There is a better way.

First we need to set a price for hay after harvest and then subtract the cost of harvest to get the value of hay standing in the field. At this point someone asks “where do I get those prices and costs?” Let’s get the hay price first. Continue...

Calf receiving colostrumColostrum is the first secretion produced by the mammary gland after parturition and contains important antibodies, which supply immunity to the newborn calf consuming it. Because calves are born with an immature immune system, it is important to provide adequate quantities of high-quality colostrum for disease protection. Colostrum is also a valuable source of nutrients for the young animal.  Ensuring proper colostrum contributes to improved calf care in the pre-weaning period, thus, decreasing weaning costs and promoting growth thereby increasing profitability. National 4-H Dairy Conference

October 2-5, 2017 in Madison, WI
One 4-H member between 15-18 years of age with receive the opportunity to attend the conference.
4-H members must have been enrolled in a dairy cow or dairy goat project for the past three years and currently have a dairy project.
Conference attendees will:
  • Meet new friends involved with dairy
  • Learn more about the dairy industry and dairy careers
  • Receive a $500 UNL CASNR scholarship
  • Receive a $500 Animal Science scholarship
